The Deerling at a very young age become very interested in science and the nature of their sect. But because they are not well accustomed to combat they act as living databases. Their memory is photograpic and they can do complex equations in their heads faster than a standard CPU module. They tend to accompany other soldiers on the battle field in order to ascertain enemy weaknesses and other vital information that can turn the tide of battle. Another very useful trick the deerling all share is the ability to glow a particular color depending on what may or may not occur. This is a genetic alteration that is done at birth. The deerling already had the ability to change color but it was for a more recreational reason. Basically if a commanding officer sees a deerling glow red he will order his trrops to fall back, or on a starship the captain will go to red alert or fall back into a defense posture.
Here is a break down of the colors.
No Glow: Is either incapacitated or nothing has or is about to occur that warrents a color change.
Red Glow: Visiable threat greater than orginally percieved. Death or something about to die.
Green Glow: Standard alert color. If a deerling is green it just means combat is a given. Anxious.
Blue Glow: If crew moral falls below a certain level
Pink Glow: No threat. Happy, docile. Pink is the color that most soldiers and crew members look for because it is a color that occurs instinctively.
